This was a not-so-good weekend @ Casa D' Wine and Needles. On Saturday morning, Viva went to the vet and although her tooth and mouth were ok, the vet discovered that she has a heart murmur, which could possibly be the result of Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or kitty heart disease. | ![]() |
I resisted the urge to burst into tears at the vet's office, and have had the weekend to mull over the next step which would be a $300 ultrasound to confirm if she has. It's treatable, but that ultrasound has to be completed before I can go any further. I took her home with me to Fresno on Saturday night because I was worried about her, and the whole weekend turned into a "you should / shouldn't get this ultrasound" from my parents and friends. According to Jason, I should do it for my own santity, if not for the cats own health.
Has anyone out there ever had a cat with a heart murmur? Any advice / suggestions / recommendations?
Then there's me. I have the worst cough I have ever had in my life. I am SHOCKED that I did not wake up half of the apartment complex last night with my hacking and wheezing. Literally, the only time it subsided this weekend was when Jason and I were drinking wine on Friday night [which was absolutely lovely, by the way]. Not beer, not water, but the red wine. Just one more reason it is the greatest beverage on earth. I am supposed to be on duty counseling students this afternoon, but I am afraid I am going to disturb the entire Student Services Center with my presence at the front desk. AKK!!!
Got a lot of knitting done in the car and during the Superbowl yesterday. My Fresno friends have given up the 'What the hell, you knit?' act and have actually become quite interested in my little hobby. Even though I was working on the boring rectangle of st st for Kyoto's back during the game, I was complimented numerous times on it.
Due to the events of the weekend I was unable to get photos taken, so a text version of progress will have to do.
- Lana Grossa Drop-Stitch Scarf - Finito!
- Kyoto - One ball finished, back panel is 1/2 done.
- Irish Hiking Legwarmers - Ripped and restarted w/ fewer stitches. Pattern should be up very soon.
- Mom's Birthday Scarf - cast on a little black number with one strand each of Bernat Boa and Microspun. Size 15 needles = very quick project.
More later. I am still in a pretty 'blah' mood this morning.

Sorry to hear about Viva. I have a friend whose cat has a cardiomyopathy. It requires daily medicine. But they can't ever catch her to give it to her. So they just let her go without it. She is not bothered without the medicine. I guess that is something to think about before you go through with the ultrasound. I hope you feel better too, but red wine is not a bad remedy! Hang in there.
oh no! poor viva! poor you! hugs to both of you! I had a chinchilla with heart murmurs, but doctors never knew if heart murmurs were something really bad for chins or not. Sending get well wishes to you and catnip dreams to Viva!
Glad to hear the red wine was scrumptious!
When my cat, Groovy, was nearly one year old he had a heart attack. There was a vet across the street so when he started freaking out I picked him up and ran over, which is where I got the news. He had had a heart attack, it was brought on by cardiac myopathy which had been worsened at such an early age by asthma, and that he would probably die.
I was devistated. He was my very first furry pet, and I adored him. The vet said that if I did nothing at all he would probably go rather quickly. The other choice was to hand ultrasounds, procedures, medication, and he still might not make it. Well I wasn't ready for him to go, so I paid $700 for a mutt cat that I got for free. He was pretty bad off for a few days. He had to have medication and Rx food for the rest of his life. Know what? It was so worth it.
He lived another 6 years, making it to 7 years old. The heart problem did finally catch up with him, but there is no way I would have missed those 6 years. It was SO worth the cost.
That's just a story about me, everyone is different. All I can say is, I'm glad I did it, I loved that cat more than I can say.

I don't have any advice for you and Viva, but I sympathize. I know how important your furry-kids can be!
And--your cough? Tea with 1 or 2 tablespoons each of honey, lemon, and brandy (roughly equal amounts of each of the extras in the cup, then top off with tea). The heat, the soothing honey, and the anesthetic properties of the brandy can really help! (And, it will look better at the front desk than red wine...)
