Jazz Hands.

Viva, in all her vain, insisted that I enter her in the Purrfect Kitty Contest. If you've got a moment, take a look and give her some love.

I went home to visit the new addition this weekend, and boy is that kid cute. I'm not sure if i've ever held a baby that was less than 1 week old! I was the only one of the siblings that would hold him, unless you count my brother who picked him up for 2 minutes and forgot to breathe he was so scared.

I also finished up and gifted the Cardi and booties. The booties were a perfect fit - he went home with them on his feet (no photos though... BOOOO). I'm ready to tackle baby gift #2 - anyone have any cute patterns for a little boy to share? In the meantime, I started the Hot Lave Cardigan, and finished about 1 ball of the Manos. I also started Matt's socks, and finished the pattern for my mystery sweater. Work is slowing down so I should get some good knitting time in this week.

While I was home, my mom shared some photos from San Luis Obispo a few weekends back. She couldn't stop laughing at these two - Can you tell that my sister and I used to be dancers?

Check out those jazz hands! Don't laugh, that form won me the tournament.

Chevy's Salsa, Part Deux.
Ok, we tried again and here are some more edits:
1) 6 large Hothouse tomatoes are key
2) Strain the salsa to get rid of excess water
3) 1/2 a White Onion = 1/4 a Spanish Onion

Has anyone else given it a go? How did it turn out?

Salsa My World

There are 3 things you should know about this post before you start reading.

1) There will be a lot of photos
2) 1/2 of these photos are at least a week old
3) It will involve salsa. UUUMMMMMM.... SALSA......

PART I - Delia is capable of completing something she started.
Look Adelle - my first socks!

I am in love with Knit Picks Sock Garden. Can't wait to start another pair with the colorway Geranium. Those bad boys are going to reach up to my knees! I am also going to use it for Clapotis II for my mom's Christmas gift (as of this week, anyways).

Bummer, I thought I had a picture of the finished Heart Sachet. Next time, I guess. Have I raved about what a great project this is? Yes? Ok. Enough for now then.

FO's in waiting this week:

Baby Dottie, with an updated collar. The new Arabella

PART II - Finished projects = Room in my stash
Yummy, come to mama:

4 hanks Manos Del Uruguay Wool in colorway Oilslick #34, for Hot Lava. Goal FO date is the end of July, because this wool just screamed "take me on your family vacation to the Coast".

Another reason I love this yarn: The SMELL. I am definitely an olfactory knitter. I should take this time to apologize to Jason who had to watch me bury my face in this stuff when I first brought it home.

PART III - Weekends Spent in Oblivion
This weekend, I went to visit my dear friend Kaci in Santa Cruz. The original purpose of the visit was to take a practice run with her hair for her upcoming wedding this August [and bask in the sun of a perfect California Saturday], but it turned into a eat-a-lot-of-brie-and-dance-around-the-living-room-to-British-rock sort of night. For your viewing pleasure:

I am stoked that I am the first person to get a business card with Kaci's new last name on it. I think the 4 glasses of wine contributed to this excitment.

I just want to eat my brie in peace, man.

For the cat-lovers, Kaci and her fiance have the coolest cat (besides Viva, of course) in the entire world. Her name is Lola (She is a showgirl...), and she likes chewing on toes. Especially mine. My only hopes of convincing the owners was to lure her into a trap and photograhing the crime as it progressed.

And nothing beats waking up in the morning to find photos like this on your digital camera:

THE FINALE - The Epic Adventure of Chevy's Salsa
I have been known in my time to consider a Margarita and a basket of Chevy's chips and salsa a meal. To this day, it is the sole reason I like to go there on many occasions. Therefore, it seemed only reasonable that I would try and re-create this spicy-smokey goodness in my own kitchen.

This is a work in progress; and when I finally get it right, I will post for all to see. Here is the chronicle of attempt numero uno:

The Original Recipe, from http://www.topsecretrecipes.com
Chevys uses chipotle peppers, or smoked red jalapeno peppers. But unless you grow your own jalapenos, it may be difficult to find the riper red variety in your local supermarket. For this recipe, the green jalapeno peppers will work fine.

6 medium tomatoes
10 jalapenos (red is best)
1/4 of a medium Spanish onion
2 cloves garlic
2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro
2 tablespoons white vinegar
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoons mesquite-flavored liquid smoke
-----------------------------------------------
1. Preheat your barbecue grill to high temperature.

2. Remove any stems from the tomatoes, then rub some oil over each tomato. You can leave the stems on the jalapenos.

3. Place the tomatoes on the grill when it’s hot. After about 10 minutes, place all of the jalapenos onto the grill. In about 10 minutes you can turn the tomatoes and the peppers. When almost the entire surface of the peppers has charred black you can remove them from the grill. The tomatoes will turn partially black, but when the skin begins to come off they are done. Put the peppers and tomatoes on a plate and let them cool.

4. When the tomatoes and peppers have cooled, remove most of the skin from the tomatoes and place them into a food processor. Pinch the stem end from each of the peppers and place them into the food processor as well. Toss out the liquid that remains on the plate.

5. Add the remaining ingredients to the food processor and puree on high speed for 5-10 seconds or until the mixture has a smooth consistency.

6. Place the salsa into a covered container and chill for several hours or overnight while the flavors develop.

Makes approximately 2 cups.

Notes from Kitchen de' Wine and Needles:
--> Get up first thing Saturday morning and go to your local famers market for Red Jalepeno Peppers. Drink a Bloody Mary to prepare for grilling later in the day. Pick up fresh Catnip to appease the Feline Gods.

--> Roma tomatoes will be overpowered by the peppers. Go for a more beefed-up variety. I recommend using 7, not 6.
--> Add the juice of 1 lime.
--> I used a yellow onion, because I don't know what a Spanish Onion is and Google was no help. Something was off with the flavor, so I will probably hunt one of these down for next time.
--> Watch the liquid smoke. That stuff if PO-TENT!
--> We roasted the tomatos and peppers without Mesquite chips. I think you need them. JSwag, can we get some Mesquite chips?
--> This is SO MUCH better when it has set overnight. Both tasters agreed it was a bit too tart immediately after blending.
--> Serve with beer, homemade if you have it. Fortunately, JSwag has become a Mr. Beer king so we don't have that problem.

I will be making attempt #2 this weekend. Let me know if you try this and have any tips or ideas to share.

Whew! Finally done. Back to work, I say.... Shit... it's already lunch?

I'm going home next weekend to see the little guy with my brother who is flying in from Portland. Dottie will be finished by then, I swear. I'm already thumbing through patterns for my next project for him - it gets up to about a million degrees in Fresno over the summer so anything wool is out. I'm thinking about making another satchel, so I may swing by CommuKNITy and see if they have any bluish shades of Artyarns Ultra Merino. The first one came out great (and SUPER quick), so I think this is my best option. Anyone else care to offer any ideas? Something I may be able to finish by Saturday?

On another note, I have done a whole bunch knitting since my last post.

FO: The Stargazer Socks, Heart Satchel #1, baby Booties
Made Progress: Arabella (with new modifications, roughly done up here), Retro Stripes, Clapotis (starting the decrease sections), Baby Dottie (all seamed up, just finishing up the neckband)

I also had an impluse purchase for one of my "Upcoming" items. Because at this point, I really need impulse purchases.

Stay tuned for photos, the recipe for Chevy's salsa, Giants praising/A's bashing, and some joyous commentary on my past 2 weekends.

I [Heart] Friday the 13th! and Happy Belated Mothers Day

"Like many human beliefs, the fear of Friday the 13th (known as paraskevidekatriaphobia) isn't exactly grounded in scientific logic. But the really strange thing is that most of the people who believe the day is unlucky offer no explanation at all, logical or illogical." [link]

"Fridays, for example, are hailed as a particularly significant day in the Christian tradition. Obviously, there is Good Friday, the day Jesus Christ was crucified. But according to Christian lore, Adam and Eve also supposedly ate the forbidden fruit on a Friday, the Great Flood started on a Friday, the builders of the Tower of Babel were tongue-tied on a Friday and the Temple of Solomon was destroyed on a Friday." [link]

"The association of Friday the 13th with being unlucky is popularly linked with the Knights Templar, and the date of Friday, October the 13th, 1307 CE." [link]

Ok all you Da Vinci Code fans, that should sound familiar to you. I will always think fondly of this day because I wrote one of my most kick-ass papers in college about the folklore surrounding Friday the 13th. I think sometimes that I would have liked to have been a cultural anthropologist; I just love folklore and retracing the path of modern superstition and icon meaning. Maybe a 2nd Bachelors degree pops? Did I just hear you faint off you desk all the way back in Fresno?

I'm off track. Imagine that. It's been a LOOOONNNNGGGG week and I am totally fried from 7-11 coffee, tired because my roommates cat was yowling at my door last night (hey by the way, we have a new cat!), feeling gross because I've eaten fast food 2 days in a row, and REALLY wanting it to be the 5pm so I can LEAVE and go drink Margaritas with the girls in Pacifica tonight. I kill me.

Old Navy, thee art a goddess! Look at this great bag:

for only $24.50! Must... resist.... handbags.....

Speaking of Old Navy, they are already advertising for the 4th of July. WTF man? I HATE when companies start advertising SO DAMN EARLY for Holidays. Now I'm sitting here, wishing that July 4th was oh, next weekend... so I could be sitting up at Fish Camp, knitting away, and oh yeah, demanding a re-match in what was a humuliating loss to my sister in Rau vs. Rau arm wrestling last year.

Back to the purpose of this blog. I finished the Star-Gazer socks last night! yay! and cast on right away for bro's new socks. I love him - the Irish Hiking Scarf I gave him for Christmas is one of his favorite things he owns! In other news, I went and checked out Commuknity a few days ago. Boy, do they have a lot of Rowan in there! Nice store, very boutique-y... I felt like I should be getting a pedicure or having some hot stones on my back while I browsed. In a good way!

My intention was to buy 1 ball of Rowan Denim to edge my Arabella tank (1 ball down! WOO!), but of course, like any normal knitter I walked out of there a few goodies I really didn't need. First, I caved and bought Rowan 37 [hangs head in shame]. I like a few of the patterns:
Kitsch :: Wicker :: Hike :: Charley :: Martha

but really now, when am I actually going to get to these?

I also got some Art Yarns Ultramerino 8, in this colorway to make a larger version of this little Satchel as a belated Mother's Day Gift. That's why I love my mom: She knows my gift will be 6 weeks late but she loves me anyway. What a gal!

That's my mama. Excuse the crappy quality, it's a photo of a photo. That was taken my Junior year of college when I was President-elect of the sorority, and I found out earlier that day we were $50,000 in debt and bawled my eyes out. She looked at me and goes, "Delia, if there is anyone in the world that can get these girls out of this shit it's you. Let's go get a bottle of wine". I love her.

Have a good weekend. Salute!

You Can't Take Me Anywhere...

Jason and I had plans to meet at Aqui's for dinner tonight but his work sent him to Barstow to fix some car at 5am in the middle of the desert (don't ask), so I headed home for a night of Oprah and Baja Fresh instead. As we watched and I dined on chips and salsa, I slowly morphed out of my work clothes and into whatever item of clothing happened to be laying around.

About 8pm, my roommate looks at me and goes "Delia, what the hell are you wearing?" I missed the best part in the above photo. The SHOES!

But dress up is FUN! I tried to explain. She wasn't having it. Her roommate looked like a bag woman (with awesome shoes) knitting a sock in her living room. But look at this:

No, I'm not talking about the fabulous Rutherford Hill Chardonnay. I'm talking about my nails. My nail lady told me today I had some of the best nails she's seen in awhile (ok, she may have been fishing for a big tip but humor me!). Why is this something that I am taking the 5 minutes to share with a bunch of people who are taking the time out of their busy days to read this? Well, I used to be a nail-biter. I mean, compulsive nail biting. And the nail lady says I have pretty, strong nails. WEEEE!!!!!

Knitting? Oh yes, you were probably here for the knitting. I've actually been doing some of that this week.

1) Arabella from Rowan 35. I am knitting the main body in the round because, well, I like K-ing better and my ability to seam sucks ass. I'm really happy with the way this is turning out... and at this rate, this may actually be done by August!
2) Proof I am still working on the Clap. I am finishing up my 5th ball of Karabella Aurora 8, and although this stuff is soft and springy, I am going to have to beat this thing to death on a blocking board. Like, back over the thing with my car to flatten it out. Nothing like shaming a piece into submission.
3) + 4) Lexie's Birthday Scarf, Ruffles from Scarf Style in Moda Dea Dream. My sister is the HARDEST person in the world to shop/make something for, and I was digging this thing so I was hoping she would say she didn't like it and I could keep it for myself. But I was so, so wrong. She LOVES it. DAMMIT. She actually likes my gift!

I won't go on and on about my weekend, it can be summed up with this: Sick. Dinner. Sick. Sleep. 3 Hours in the car. Dinner. Score a 135 bowling. Drink beer out of red cups. Master the art of flip cup. Pass Out. 3 Hours in the car.

After I took all my photos, Viva flew out of nowhere and attacked the loose yarn on Clap like a drunk frat guy tp a keg. Thus preceeded My 2nd photo essay:
It Went A Little Something Like This...

Viva: Die you piece of Karabella scum!
Delia: Viva gets your filty claws off that very-easy to snag yarn!
Viva: Damn you! If you get any closer, I am going to rip off those pretty little nails your manicurist was raving about!!
Delia: You Bitch!
Thinking quickly, Delia throws a small ball of leftover Jaeger Baby Merino from Baby Dottie at Viva to divert her attention. The yarn quickly begins to unwind.
Viva: Dammit! You know how I get when a ball of yarn starts to unravel. Now I am going to have to stick my ears back and focus on getting this thing back in shape before finishing off the Clap
Delia: A Hah! Clap is now tucked away in the knitting backet, safe from your kitty claws of death!
Viva: [to herself] She thinks this is over... just wait until you fall asleep tonight...

F*ck it's late. The End.
